I am a self-taught artist working in a variety of book and paper arts as well as sketchbook diaries. Originally from Mississippi, I have made my home in Wales for several years. Travel is one of my great passions and I use it as both a means and an end to scouring flea markets, dark shops on unlikely corners, antiquarian book alleys, and plain old junk stalls, looking for old maps, hand-calligraphed letters, vintage ads, and antique picture books. These are usually distressed beyond ordinary use, which gives me permission to transform them into a new form, one that seems to involve anyone who has ever held or read the original in its younger days. As our world becomes more digitized and screen-centred, old print and maps evoke slower, more mysterious journeys. Recording my travels, searches, and creative process (to say nothing of the good meals along the way) in sketchbook journals is one of life’s great pleasures; I enjoy teaching these diary techniques to others. My writing on art and travel has been published in a wide variety of magazines and I am the author of A Drinking Companion: Alcohol and Writers’ Lives.
